I am the author of Our Lady of Victory, the Saga of an African-American Catholic Community. It was written out of a necessity to preserve our community’s history and not a moment too soon. The school was torn down after the book was published and the only pictures I was able to get are in the book. So I’m glad I did this project.

Shirley Harris-Slaughter is a Michigan native. She was baptized into the Catholic faith with her family as a child. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Cleary University in Howell, Michigan in 1992. She is married to Langston and resides in Oak Park, MI.
Shirley’s thesis titled: “The Implementation of the Most Comprehensive Approach to Restoring the Michigan Central Depot” was about saving a dilapidated historic train station in downtown Detroit. She resurrected the Friends of the Michigan Central Depot, and brought attention to this neglected piece of history.
Her love of history has propelled her to write about her experience growing up in this catholic community, and correcting its omission from the pages of history.
